(Nov. 12, 2009) – Antron Brown raced his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools dragster to the No. 14 qualifying position Thursday afternoon at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The 23-time NHRA winner, who enters the race ranked fourth in the NHRA Countdown to 1 standings, made only one qualifying attempt on Thursday due to the unique qualifying format at the two Pomona races. Brown’s bright blue Matco Tools car posted a run of 4.592 seconds at 158.48 mph after losing traction in the left lane at Auto Club Raceway. Brown finished 14th in the order. His DSR teammates Tony Schumacher and Cory McClenathan qualified first and fourth, respectively, on Thursday at Pomona. “We don’t have anything to lose this weekend, so we’re just going to go out and have fun and try to throw it down,” Brown said. “The conditions are good enough to set a national record and that’s what we’re going to try and do. It was obviously too aggressive for that session, so we’ll come back out Friday and get the DSR Matco Tools car in the show.” Professional nitro qualifying is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday with Top Fuel followed by Funny Car. Brown earned the pole at the season-opening Winternationals (3.708-seconds) and raced to a runner-up finish (to Doug Kalitta) at Pomona in February. Don Schumacher Racing, headquartered in Brownsburg, Ind., consists of seven professional NHRA teams: The U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster driven by six-time world champion Tony Schumacher; the FRAM Tough Guard dragster of Cory McClenathan, and the Matco Tools dragster of Antron Brown. The Funny Car teams are the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge driven by Ron Capps, the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge piloted by Jack Beckman, and the shelor.com Dodge driven by NHRA rookie Matt Hagan. Matt Smith rides the Nitro Fish Ultimate Gear Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle for DSR. Since 1998, Don Schumacher Racing teams have won 135 national events in 259 final rounds, and seven world championships.
