(Nov. 13, 2009) – Antron Brown powered his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools dragster to the provisional No. 7 qualifying position Friday afternoon at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The 23-time NHRA winner used an elapsed time of 3.853-seconds to move to the provisional No. 6 qualifying position. A day after slowing to a lap of 4.592 seconds at 158.48 mph (No. 14) due to a broken output shaft, the Matco Tools crew posted a solid lap on Friday’s only qualifying attempt. Brown used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to power the bright blue Matco Tools/Valvoline car to a run of 3.853 at 313.88 in the right lane at Auto Club Raceway. Brown’s DSR teammates, Tony Schumacher and Cory McClenathan, currently sit third and sixth in the 16-car field. “That was a good, solid lap for our DSR Matco Tools team,” Brown said. “We needed to just get down the race track and that was a good run. Now we’re in the field and we can go after it tomorrow and get aggressive. It should be fun and fast on Saturday.” Professional nitro qualifying is scheduled for Noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday with Funny Car followed by Top Fuel. Brown earned the pole at the season-opening Winternationals (3.708-seconds) and raced to a runner-up finish (to Doug Kalitta) at Pomona in February. Don Schumacher Racing, headquartered in Brownsburg, Ind., consists of seven professional NHRA teams: The U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster driven by six-time world champion Tony Schumacher; the FRAM Tough Guard dragster of Cory McClenathan, and the Matco Tools dragster of Antron Brown. The Funny Car teams are the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge driven by Ron Capps, the Valvoline/Mail Terminal Services Dodge piloted by Jack Beckman, and the shelor.com Dodge driven by NHRA rookie Matt Hagan. Matt Smith rides the Nitro Fish Ultimate Gear Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle for DSR.
